Event Description

Our Walk-In Program operates on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 10am-1pm and is open to anyone who lives within the Seattle city limits.  Customers are allowed to choose which groceries they would like from our weekly selection.  Our Walk-In Program also offers a Baby Corner during the first full week of each month, Toddler Bags for families with toddlers, and No Cook Bags for the homeless population.

What we'll be doing

Volunteers will be performing a variety of tasks which may include:  1. Distributing food to customers - Volunteers will stand along the tables where customers shop and keep the food stocked, help people reach items, answer questions, and enforce the rules of how much people can take of each item.  2.  Sorting donations - Volunteers may be organizing donations in to crates, separating good produce from produce that must be composted, and other sorting tasks that allow us to more easily serve our customers.  3.  Cleaning and organizing.

What you should know

Lunch will be provided, though it is recommended that you bring snacks and water bottles.  Please dress for the weather; our food bank is open to the outside air.

Where to meet

Enter the food bank through the fence in the alleyway.  Meet in the food bank office at the back of the warehouse (if you tell someone you are looking for Tina, they will tell you where to go).

Organization: Food Bank @ St. Mary's

Located in the Jackson neighborhood of Seattle’s Central District, The Food Bank @ St. Mary’s began as a tiny neighborhood food pantry in the early 1940’s, offering emergency assistance to families in need. The pantry provided continuous service throughout the 40’s and 50’s. By 1963, the pantry was recognized as a food bank that was open to serve all people, with regular hours and steady year-round service. In need of more space to keep up with rising customer numbers, The Food Bank @ St. Mary’s moved from a small space in the church into our present home on the ground floor of the church rectory. There are 26 Food Banks in Seattle of which The Food Bank @ St. Mary’s is the second largest in numbers served.

Driving: The food bank is near these bus lines: 14, 27, 8, 4, 48 and are 2 blocks south of the intersection 20th Ave S & S Jackson St. They operate out out of St. Mary’s Church rectory basement, directly across the street from the church.

Please Note: Enter the food bank through the fence in the alleyway. Meet in the food bank office at the back of the warehouse (if you tell someone you are looking for Tina, they will tell you where to go).
